The
Canadian Rockies have no more identifiable a landmark
as the Banff Springs Hotel, an icon of so many
historical traditions in the country. Its majesty
peeks out from a sea of towering pine trees, an icon
of the ambition to settle the West and tame the
mountains that was so rooted in the patriotic
motivations of early Canadians that lived their lives
for the greater expansion of the country. Their toil
against the forces of nature are finely transposed by
the presence of the hotel, built with the spirit of
Scottish-style baronial castles, at the edge of the
roaring Bow River and in the foreground of a dense
mountain forest of wilderness. As visionary William
Van Horne, general manager of CP Railways, professed
once upon a time: “If we cannot export the scenery,
we will import the tourists.” By 1888, under the
commissioned services of New York architect Bruce
Price, those tourists had a roof to take shelter
beneath. Chateau projects at Lake Louise and Frontenac
furthered this vision of a string of luxury hotels
linking Rocky Mountain destinations, but Banff Springs
was the archetype, the crown jewel.
The
original edifice stood for thirty years, during which
time visitors were ushered over the unforgiving terrain
from either the West Coast or Canada’s Prairie
provinces. In 1928, the vision to restore the Banff
Springs Hotel to its original, luxurious intentions led
to a thorough renovation. Furniture designed to the same
precise specifications as antiques found in old European
manors were shipped across the country from Montreal by
Castle and Son Manufacturing. The property was expanded.
In short, the renovations aspired to exceed expectation,
and the end result was a hotel that re-captured its
original prestige as a recreational oasis. As the symbol
not only of luxury but also of achievement, of control
over the environment, the Banff Springs was again a
testament to the ethos of Canadian values and heritage,
restored to its original grandeur.
As
time wore on, winter in the mountains became more
accessible, and indeed enjoyable. By the winter of 1969,
the decision had been made for the Banff Springs Hotel
to keep its doors open year-round; guests would frequent
the lodge even when a blanket of snow covered the
storied Stanley Thompson-designed golf course. In recent
decades, the addition of a third nine-hole loop,
swimming pool and health club facilities, 23,000 square
feet of meeting space and the Willow Stream,
European-style spa, the Fairmont Banff Springs is an
icon of hotel tradition and modernity; at once an
historic site and a state-of-the-art luxury hotel.
Today,
the 770 rooms and suites at the Fairmont Banff Springs
offer a glimpse into the parallel spirit of past and
present that the hotel embraces. Cozy, traditional rooms
with clear views of the mountain are available, but so
too are spacious suites with modern lines and contours,
and sweeping views of the mountains. And the selection
of restaurants is unmatched; authentic regional
ingredients, sushi, and international flair come
together in different environments to create an eclectic
mix of culinary experiences that will satisfy any
palate. From the five-star, award-winning Banffshire
Club to an in-room snack, there is no gastronomical
craving that cannot be fulfilled.
May
the mountains be your playground, in one of the most
vibrant and elegant mountain villages to be found
anywhere.
