Where to Stay - Inverary
Resort
Nestled
in a location National Geographic Traveller felt fit to
deem 'One of 50 places of a lifetime,' the Inverary Inn's location
on a vast and beautiful property overlooking the Bras D'Or Lakes
holds dear the ambiance and charm so quintessential to the Cape
Breton Island experience. Located in the quaint town of Baddeck,
which serves as a gateway to the Cabot Trail, the Inverary Inn and
the surrounding town comes alive in the
summer with a vibrant array of genuine maritime shops, cafes and restaurants.
Stroll along the waterfront and you'll see the fresh catch coming
off the boats, just in time for the evening's menu.
There is little doubt as to why
inventor Alexander Graham Bell settled on Baddeck as his summer
residence. The indelible mark of Bell can be found throughout the town,
and his palatial estate “Beinn Bhreagh” (translating from Gaelic to
“Beautiful Mountain”) sits on the opposite shore. One of the towns
major tourist draws is also the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, located
near the Bell Bay Golf Club. Nevertheless, the legacy of the
inventor of the telephone is merely a footnote in the history of
Baddeck.
In the 1850s, five
decades before Bell ever set foot in the town, the main lodge of the
Inverary Inn was erected on the Baddeck waterfront, and restorations
have brought the Inn its current luxurious grandeur. Inverary offers accommodations
in the main lodge, or in a variety of several smaller, private buildings on the
periphery of the property. The
rooms are cozy and delightfully comfortable, and the old-fashioned and
well-furbished lodgings and communal room encourage guests to relax and lounge around the
premises. Tennis courts are situated at the back of the resort just a
stone's throw from the water, and the incoming breeze off the lake can
add an interesting element to the game. More in tune with these wind
patterns are the kayaks, canoes, water-bikes and paddleboats that the
resort offers its guests to take out around the neighbouring wharf.
Guided boat tours are also available for
those looking to explore the outer reaches of the lakes region. Another
link to the famed telephone inventor is 'The Elsie,' a 55-foot yacht
that guests can take for lake cruises. Souvenirs
of all aspects of the Baddeck experience can be bought at on-site boutiques house beautiful
souvenirs.
Entertainment is offered
frequently at the Inn, with Thistledown Pub being the location to
find great local music and various other entertainment.
For
dining, The
Inverary Inn offers two wonderful restaurants. The Floras Dining Room
is located
in the hotel, and the Lakeside Café is situated by the water’s
edge. Floras is the choice for elegant dining, as well as a
superb buffet breakfast, to greet the day. The Lakeside Café offers
a more casual atmosphere, complete with outdoor deck. The friendly
service and authentic Cape Breton fare completes the Inverary experience.
